Manoj Kewalramani, chair of Indo-Pacific Studies and a fellow at Takshashila Institution, was quoted in The Straits Times on Xi navigating tensions with Deng’s legacy over centralising political power.

He was quoted as saying, "Mr Xi is essentially arguing that Deng’s takeaway from the 1980s reform and Tiananmen was – quoting from Mr Xi’s speech – to “focus on party building, strengthen ideological and political work and education on fine traditions, improve the party’s leadership level and governing ability”.
